What is Peacebuilding?
A non-profit that provides training, program and partnerships on crucial topics
Our communities are home to individuals who have undergone psychological trauma and are in need of healing.
The Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute stands as a prominent trauma education nonprofit in Minnesota, offering vital training, programs, and partnerships to address the state's lack of awareness around trauma, restorative justice practices, and racial healing education.
The impact of STAR (Strategies for Trauma Awareness & Resilience)
Established in 2010, our organization took shape following the participation in the STAR (Strategies for Trauma Awareness & Resilience) training at the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP) at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va., in 2008. This training had a profound impact, sparking a realization that the mental health systems fell short in addressing historical, structural, and cultural trauma, particularly experienced by people of color.
This recognition led to a shift in focus towards understanding and addressing broader societal issues. The establishment of the Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute emerged as one of the solutions from this collective effort.
Our mission revolves around transforming psychological trauma into non-violent power
An estimated 16,000 attendees of our training programs have reported heightened confidence in addressing psychological trauma, disrupting cycles of violence, and fostering resilience using restorative justice-focused strategies within their respective spheres of influence.
A small percentage of the population can catalyze substantial change
As Dr. Erica Chenoweth, a Harvard political scientist, highlights, less than 5% of individuals working collectively can drive structural change over time. The Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute has set an ambitious goal to engage 5% of Minnesotans in our peacebuilding initiatives by 2030, reaching an estimated 285,000 individuals.
Our mission
Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute’s (Peacebuilding) mission is to support the empowerment of racially, sexually, religiously, ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse communities. For this purpose, Peacebuilding is committed to training and supporting individuals and organizations to become anti-racist, trauma-informed, resilience-oriented, and restorative justice-focused in Minnesota Mní Sóta Maḳhóčhe ("the land where the waters reflect the skies") ancestral, and contemporary Homelands of the Dakota and Anishinaabe peoples, the United States, and around the world.
