Peacebuilding Update: March 2018

Today is International Women’s Day around the world. This month is Women’s History Month in the US. We have been celebrating these events with daily posts of powerful though nearly forgotten women on Peacebuilding’s blog this month. Making such proclamations is important Peacebuilding action because for too long, the many sides of women’s lives in our communities, at work, at school, in business, and in the home have not been told in a just, fair, or truthful manner. At Peacebuilding, we teach that justice is a basic human need that is most fully satisfied with restorative justice.

One form of collective trauma that we recently learned about is that since 1851, obituaries in the New York Times have been dominated by white men. Today the NYT took responsibility for the harm these deliberate choices have caused for over 100 years. They took action to right this harm by publishing the obituaries of 15 notable women, which were previously not included in their newspaper upon their deaths. You can read the full article here and submit the names of others who have been overlooked or nearly forgotten. We look forward to other media outlets engaging in peacebuilding actions with similar creative practices of restorative justice.

We’re working to do our part in Minnesota with our Peacebuilding community trainings and events. We welcome you to join us for an evening of truth telling for creative justice on April 25, 2018 at LUNAFEST: Minneapolis, nine short films by, for, about women at the Riverview Theater. Together, we are Making Minnesota the Peacebuilding Power State for All.
