Surgeon (1832 – 1919)

• Pioneering female physician, earning her degree from Syracuse Medical College in 1855
• Found nineteenth century strictures of women’s dress inhumane and chose to wear men’s clothing
• Awarded a Medal of Honor for her service as a surgeon and nurse in the Civil War and wore it every day
• Faced ridicule as a non-conformist female physician in a male-dominated field
